This unique evening invites applied mathematicians from all career stages to reflect, connect, and share the personal stories that shape who we are—not just as professionals, but as people. Unlike traditional technical talks, this event focuses on lived experience: navigating illness or loss, grappling with failure, making unexpected turns, or discovering belonging. By shifting the spotlight from mathematics to mathematicians, we aim to foster a warm, inclusive environment that celebrates the rich diversity of paths and perspectives within our community.
Whether you're sharing a story or simply listening, join us for an evening of insight, connection, and community.
This event is sponsored by the SIAM Activity Group on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (SIAG-EDI) .
Anyone is invited to submit a story to present at the event! To express interest in participating as a storyteller, please fill out our brief interest form by July 15. Organizers will follow up with selected participants by July 21 and will offer support in preparing for the event. We aim to feature a diverse mix of voices and stories that reflect the theme "Every Trajectory Unique."
For more tips on how to write a story, please see this page from The Moth .
This event is open to everyone — whether or not you’re sharing a story. Come be part of the audience and enjoy an evening of connection, reflection, and community. There will be light activities to help spark conversation, a cash bar available, and plenty of space to listen, share informally, and celebrate the diverse journeys that shape our mathematical lives.
